About this book
The author was drawn into the Army through ROTC, and was trained to fly helicopters in combat over Vietnam. He flew both Huey "slicks" and Huey "gunships": the former on defense as he flew troops into battle, and the latter on offense as he took the battle to the enemy. Through this book, the author relives his experiences flying and fighting, with special attention given to the pilots' day-to-day lives - such as the prankish smoke bombing of Disneyland, the nickname for a United States Army-sponsored compound for prostitution. Some of the pilots Joyce served with survived the war and went on to have careers with commercial airlines, and many were killed.

About this book
Flying insects are intelligent micromachines capable of exquisite maneuvers in unpredictable environments. Understanding these systems advances our knowledge of flight control, sensor suites, and unsteady aerodynamics, which is of crucial interest to engineers developing intelligent flying robots or micro air vehicles (MAVs). The insights we gain when synthesizing bioinspired systems can in turn benefit the fields of neurophysiology, ethology and zoology by providing real-life tests of the proposed models. This book was written by biologists and engineers leading the research in this crossdisciplinary field. It examines all aspects of the mechanics, technology and intelligence of insects and insectoids. After introductory-level overviews of flight control in insects, dedicated chapters focus on the development of autonomous flying systems using biological principles to sense their surroundings and autonomously navigate. A significant part of the book is dedicated to the mechanics and control of flapping wings both in insects and artificial systems. Finally hybrid locomotion, energy harvesting and manufacturing of small flying robots are covered. A particular feature of the book is the depth on realization topics such as control engineering, electronics, mechanics, optics, robotics and manufacturing. This book will be of interest to academic and industrial researchers engaged with theory and engineering in the domains of aerial robotics, artificial intelligence, and entomology.

Figure 4 Super-imposed sequence ... Sensing capabilities are oen poor: For small remotely controlled (RC) helicopters, sensing is limited because the on- board sensors must deal with a large amount of vibration caused by the helicopter blades rotating at about Hz, as well as higher frequency noise from the engine.

I was hopeful but that faded rather quick

Let me first say I am a big fan of WLToys Helicopter products. I own multiple V911s and v922s. Past positive experiences led me to making the purchase of the V912 Helicopter. While my v911s are very fun I was looking to go to a larger heli just to scratch an itch. Because I have had great experiences with both the v911 and v922 I expected the same from the v912. Below are my thought of the heli and then the reason for 3 stars and a return product.Unboxing: Out of the box I was like a kid on Christmas (I'm 30 but still a big kid). The helicopter looks fantastic. The body is very similar to the v911, but feels and looks so much stronger due to all of the metal parts. Although I was aware of the dimensions of the helicopter when I ordered it, seeing it in person my first thoughts were "wow this is big". The physical build quality is great and I have no doubts that the heli could take some punishment in the event a harder crash should happen. The remote was a very... 3/5 Dustin Spires - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Requires a bit of fine tuning...but a good start

For a first helicopter, I'd not suggest this..but rather, go with the V911. After you learn the basics of flying and crashing, you can move up to this flying bus. At about 16 inches long, you can really get some speed up but it's hard to stop on a dime like the V911 could.Overall you need to fine tune the product from the box. Level your swashplate by eye and then you're set to bind and fly. The stock battery gives you about 9 minutes flight time, but be sure to set a timer for 7 or 8 to give you time to land!I suggest going to HobbyKing and getting their "Hobbyking 2-8S Cell Checker with Low Voltage Alarm" Set it to 3.4 or so and do some testing at lower levels to see where you get after the alarm sounds. For me 3.3 is too low and only gives me about 30 seconds landing time. The unit needs to be balanced a bit but will fly none the less. There are plenty of prop balancers you can get at hobby or online shops. I'd suggest you get them... 5/5 Dave "Sonic" - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Like cruising in a Cadillac

With about 6-- V911's experience, it's enjoyable to be flying this 7.4V 850 mVa, smooooth.. Up here in the frozen tundra ofN.E. Idaho, we get some kinda wind, but this super charged baby handles it quite well. The smaller V911's would get suckedup, once rooftop altitude was made. But not quite bad with this V911 on steroids. I'm wondering when Syma will come outw/their version.OK, now some very important news; the V912 binds nicely w/the V911 transmitter. As mentioned, I'm very comfortable w/theV911 transmitter. So I intend to stay w/the transmitter I'm used to.That's right. I'll say it again, don't buy the whole V912 package unless you need the transmitter, charger, & an extra set of blades. Instead get a couple of extra batteries. I think you will wantto keep this guy in the air. Also the basic V912 can be purchased as just the heli by itself for about $45.So, unless you need the whole package just buy the V912 & a charger. Great little toy

Most of the other reviews have hit the major pros and cons with this, but there are still a few more that I can add. Hope they help in making your purchasing decisions!PRO:- Thanks to the gyro, very short learning curve. Remote has two joysticks. Left side only moves up/down and controls speed of the rotors, which controls how much lift they generate. Right joystick moves up/down (controlling forward/reverse) and left/right (makes heli spin). You can also moving the right stick diagonally to make various turns while moving forward or backwards (reverse "figure-8's" are always impressive).- Surprisingly large number of "mods" that can be done to a $30 heli. After experimenting, I have settled on two minor ones. First, I removed the spring from the left joystick in the controller. This lets me put the heli in a hover and let go of the remote ("look ma, no hands!"). I have also moved the landing gear forward in their mounts to push the center of... 4/5 RJ (NY, NY) - See all my reviews = Durability:, December 24, 2010

An unsung hero of the indoor RC helis - The Syma S107 (7.5 inches long)

RATING: After flying the 7.5 inch Syma S107 indoor heli for about 3 months now, I have to say that it is one of the most under-rated RC heli out there, hands down. Shop around. At about $30 online with taxes and stuff, this little trooper delivers the looks, detail, durability and performance of a much pricier heli. The Syma S107 has only 3-way controls but it competes surprisingly well with the likes of the Blade MCX2 which has 4-way controls and retails for about $150 off-line.PERFORMANCE: I find it more fun to fly the Syma S107 than the smoother and more mellifluous Blade MCX2. In this sense the Syma S107 hews to a less is more principle: i.e. it delivers more with less. But here is the irony of the whole situation: the Syma S107's ragged performance edge actually connects with you better than the ultra-smooth Blade MCX2. It's almost like the difference between stick shift and automatic transmission. The S107's controls just feel more tactile than those of the Blade... 5/5 C. Is there such a thing as a toy that's too perfect...?

The Syma S107 is so easy to control that on my first flight I had it tour my whole apartment, zooming in and out of closets and never touching an obstacle until I deliberately landed it. If you've never flown a good RC heli before, you might need to practice a bit. It might be your second or third flight before you get that good. The S107 is *really* that easy to control.I'm sure that many of you have played with Air Hogs and other micro helis and you long for a little heli that just plain flies where you want it to fly and stays up in the air. I'm here to tell you that such perfection is within your grasp. Before I got my S107, I already owned two Syma S105s and I never get tired of flying them. They look almost identical to the S107 and the remote is identical, but they take a little bit of skill to fly with precision and I've made little tweaks here and there to get better control. The S107 takes almost no skill to fly. They gyro makes... 5/5 Hey Mo!! (The City of Townsville) - See all my reviews, July 28, 2010

I fly other hobby helicopters, such as T-rex 450's and a 500, but wanted something small for the backyard and parks, and that was simple to maintain (and also just for fun while the bigger batteries are charging). And while it can't do inverted, I still have fun with it and have thought this may be a good platform for a scale fuselage since it can't do 3D, but is very stable. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 3, 2015

So I wanted a mid size chopper. It was tough to decide between V912 and DH 9116, I picked this one because I have the F45 and am very happy with it. There was no choice of color but I hoped for the blue one, And when I opened the box my wife said my eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. And man what a beautiful Blue Helicopter. Out of the box it flue way to much to the left, but after a few adjustments on the swash plate and servo rods, this bird is AWESOM. It hovers 2 feet off the floor dead vertical in about a 6 foot square area in the center of my living room. Then I took it up to about 6 feet above the furniture and flue it at a nice pace around the room that's about 15 x 15. Its still a little to big for my house , But if RC helicopters are one of your hobby's like mine, Then you can fly this Chopper anywhere.. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 10, 2014

    My First Mid-Sized Single Blade

Before flying this I had only flown the V911 Small Single-Blade and Gyro Mid-Sized Helicopters. The first thing I noticed was that to get it into the air I had to gun it or it would tip on take-off. When I finally got it airborne and trimmed out it seemed pretty stable and I started flying around with increasing distance. After several minutes I seemed to start getting the "TBE" as instead of flying straight it was sliding sideways. I was unable to regain control for a proper landing and it angled into the ground, breaking both main blades.I replaced the blades, checking all the screws for tightness (some were loose), and installed the optional camera. It is possible that my lack of experience with this type/size of bird led to my crash. But I feel I advanced in this hobby by repairing and upgrading this Helicopter. I look forward to flying it again and gaining more experience with the controller. This is not a toy for small... 1/5 Amazon Customer "Sam" (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews = Durability:, October 19, 2013

Best Heli EVER - NOT EVEN KIDDING

I have flown a LOT of R/C planes. Gas, Electric, Glider. I own an embarrassing amount of coaxial helis. This beats them all - No joke. You should know - I suck at flying helis. Badly. I fly them all the time in the Realflight Sim (Excellent BTW), and it ends in tragedy and disaster. Every time. Every. Time.I'm fairly good at flying coaxial helis, however. Pretty much anyone with a pulse would be. I think you could manage if you are missing an arm. They are fun for poking around the house at about 1ft/sec top speed, they will hover while you make yourself a sandwich, and supreme at playing 'what can I land on' games (The Syma 107 cannot be beat for that). I have some big ones for flying outside. They are terrible outside. I want to fly outside...Then I read glowing reviews about the v911. Beginners love it, CP Snobs sneer at it. Perfect. Extremely a blast to fly

Customer Video Review Length:: 2:06 MinsI have this model but in the black and orange color, wish I had got this blue and white model, this bird is easy to fly, very durable, handles breezes quite well, is quite fast almost too fast for inside use. after over 50 flights with this I have noticed one slight flaw, the swash plate center piece will rise up causing the helo to drift backwards, so just make sure to push it back down after each flight, there is a fix buy the nine eagles 260a pro swash plates for $3 and it will cure the problem I went ahead and spent the $9 and the nice light weight aluminum CNC parts for just cause they are cool looking. I am really hoping to get a second one (blue and white) to add to my already 9 helicopters. I did not buy mine from this seller I got mine from banggood.com and at that time for $45 its now $53, but so much better than it counterparts the align T-100s and the nine eagles 260a Pro and a whole lot cheaper also.3/21/12 got new 2nd one blus and... 5/5 Dan (aka THXkid) (Phoenix, Az United States) - See all my reviews = Durability:, March 4, 2012

    worth twice the price!!

I have been flying rc helis for many, many years. I have owned dozens and still own several. I mostly fly my 450 trex clones, however, I still love smaller helis for indoor flying during the long, cold winters that we have here in the mountains and for a change of pace from 450 size helis. The v911 is EXCEPTIONAL in every way. I cannot find any flaws with this heli.I live above 8000' and it still has power to spare. The build quality is very good. The supplied controller is also very good and even has dual rates.I consistently get 5 minute flight times. When I do fly it outside, I regularly fly it in winds to 5-6 mph and it is a blast and controllable.Inside, the v911 flys just fine also. The heli is very stable in flight and hovers well.I liked this heli so much that I ordered another one just like it.I have almost 100 flights on mine and all is still well. I have not crashed it but I'd bet that it is durable due to... 5/5 purnielou - See all my reviews = Durability:, September 11, 2012
