Pucker Factor 10, Memoir of a U.S. Army Helicopter Pilot in Vietnam

Creator: James Joyce | 2003-06-01

Through this book, the author relives his experiences flying and fighting, with special attention given to the pilots' day-to-day lives - such as the prankish smoke bombing of Disneyland, the nickname for a United States Army-sponsored ...

Publisher: McFarland & Company Incorporated Pub

About this book
The author was drawn into the Army through ROTC, and was trained to fly helicopters in combat over Vietnam. He flew both Huey "slicks" and Huey "gunships": the former on defense as he flew troops into battle, and the latter on offense as he took the battle to the enemy. Through this book, the author relives his experiences flying and fighting, with special attention given to the pilots' day-to-day lives - such as the prankish smoke bombing of Disneyland, the nickname for a United States Army-sponsored compound for prostitution. Some of the pilots Joyce served with survived the war and went on to have careers with commercial airlines, and many were killed.

About this book
Flying insects are intelligent micromachines capable of exquisite maneuvers in unpredictable environments. Understanding these systems advances our knowledge of flight control, sensor suites, and unsteady aerodynamics, which is of crucial interest to engineers developing intelligent flying robots or micro air vehicles (MAVs). The insights we gain when synthesizing bioinspired systems can in turn benefit the fields of neurophysiology, ethology and zoology by providing real-life tests of the proposed models. This book was written by biologists and engineers leading the research in this crossdisciplinary field. It examines all aspects of the mechanics, technology and intelligence of insects and insectoids. After introductory-level overviews of flight control in insects, dedicated chapters focus on the development of autonomous flying systems using biological principles to sense their surroundings and autonomously navigate. A significant part of the book is dedicated to the mechanics and control of flapping wings both in insects and artificial systems. Finally hybrid locomotion, energy harvesting and manufacturing of small flying robots are covered. A particular feature of the book is the depth on realization topics such as control engineering, electronics, mechanics, optics, robotics and manufacturing. This book will be of interest to academic and industrial researchers engaged with theory and engineering in the domains of aerial robotics, artificial intelligence, and entomology.

Encyclopedia of Machine Learning

Figure 4 Super-imposed sequence ... Sensing capabilities are oen poor: For small remotely controlled (RC) helicopters, sensing is limited because the on- board sensors must deal with a large amount of vibration caused by the helicopter blades rotating at about Hz, as well as higher frequency noise from the engine.

I was hopeful but that faded rather quick

Let me first say I am a big fan of WLToys Helicopter products. I own multiple V911s and v922s. Past positive experiences led me to making the purchase of the V912 Helicopter. While my v911s are very fun I was looking to go to a larger heli just to scratch an itch. Because I have had great experiences with both the v911 and v922 I expected the same from the v912. Below are my thought of the heli and then the reason for 3 stars and a return product.Unboxing: Out of the box I was like a kid on Christmas (I'm 30 but still a big kid). The helicopter looks fantastic. The body is very similar to the v911, but feels and looks so much stronger due to all of the metal parts. Although I was aware of the dimensions of the helicopter when I ordered it, seeing it in person my first thoughts were "wow this is big". The physical build quality is great and I have no doubts that the heli could take some punishment in the event a harder crash should happen. The remote was a very... 3/5 Dustin Spires - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Requires a bit of fine tuning...but a good start

For a first helicopter, I'd not suggest this..but rather, go with the V911. After you learn the basics of flying and crashing, you can move up to this flying bus. At about 16 inches long, you can really get some speed up but it's hard to stop on a dime like the V911 could.Overall you need to fine tune the product from the box. Level your swashplate by eye and then you're set to bind and fly. The stock battery gives you about 9 minutes flight time, but be sure to set a timer for 7 or 8 to give you time to land!I suggest going to HobbyKing and getting their "Hobbyking 2-8S Cell Checker with Low Voltage Alarm" Set it to 3.4 or so and do some testing at lower levels to see where you get after the alarm sounds. For me 3.3 is too low and only gives me about 30 seconds landing time. The unit needs to be balanced a bit but will fly none the less. There are plenty of prop balancers you can get at hobby or online shops. I'd suggest you get them... 5/5 Dave "Sonic" - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Like cruising in a Cadillac

With about 6-- V911's experience, it's enjoyable to be flying this 7.4V 850 mVa, smooooth.. Up here in the frozen tundra ofN.E. Idaho, we get some kinda wind, but this super charged baby handles it quite well. The smaller V911's would get suckedup, once rooftop altitude was made. But not quite bad with this V911 on steroids. I'm wondering when Syma will come outw/their version.OK, now some very important news; the V912 binds nicely w/the V911 transmitter. As mentioned, I'm very comfortable w/theV911 transmitter. So I intend to stay w/the transmitter I'm used to.That's right. I'll say it again, don't buy the whole V912 package unless you need the transmitter, charger, & an extra set of blades. Instead get a couple of extra batteries. I think you will wantto keep this guy in the air. Also the basic V912 can be purchased as just the heli by itself for about $45.So, unless you need the whole package just buy the V912 & a charger. And, oh yeah,... 5/5 Amazon Customer "danielfrank1" (PHX, AZ) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Critical Piece of Instruction....

We were disapointed in this toy on Christmas morning. It was impossible to fly - it just went sideways as soon as it took off and nothing we did seemed to calibrate it sufficiently to hover. The instruction manual says "After charging the aircraft the light will flash for ten seconds. Turn on the aircraft and controller and wait for flashing lights to indicate the aircraft is ready for flight." What it fails to mention is that it is critical to place the "aircraft" on a flat surface at his time IMMEDIATELY after inserting the battery. The model then apparently is able to calibrate itself and will hover reasonably stablely. The online manual clued me in to our mistake (we were probably holding the model in our hands in an un-level position for the first dozen seconds after plugging in the battery)"When insert the charged battery, quad copter will into automatic detection state (the indicator light flashing swift in the first ten seconds when power on) at that time,... 4/5 D. $50 of Awesomeness

Let me preface by saying that I own around 40 RC helicopter ranging from high end $3000 gassers to cheap $25 fp toys. This was my first quad. I bought this at the 49.99 price point and have no regrets even though they are now 39.99This has been the best $50 that I have spent in a long time. There are so many things going for this kit, where do I begin. The Good-Incredibly durable. I have crashed countless times from goofing around and flying indoors and have yet to cause any permanent damage. Even though this is a cheap product they made good choices in durable materials.-Very stable and easy to fly. My wife has no experience with helicopters, but I was able to get her to try this out in our living room.-Stable in outdoor conditions. I was surprised at the ability to fly this in light-breeze conditions.-Payload capacity. For fun, I strapped an iPod nano to the bottom to shoot video. This weighs 35 grams and the quad seemed to be able to... 4/5 Gadget Junkie (Bay Area,, CA United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Revised instructions - UPDATED

***** UPDATED Jan. 11, 2014 **********I had a couple of people tell me that they could not get their copter transmitters to connect. After playing with the sequence a bit, we found that on some copters (not all... go figure) the TX should be turned on and initialized BEFORE the copter gets to the gyro initialization process - which makes it even more important to be ready to set it on a level surface before plugging the battery in. Anyway, this sequence change seems to address the problem some of the copters were having. The instructions have been updated to reflect this change. Now back to your regularly scheduled review...*****************************************I've been in R/C for 30+ years, and was very involved in R/C helis. This was my first quadcopter, and have enjoyed it very much. The hardest thing about this copter is getting it out of the box.
