Pucker Factor 10, Memoir of a U.S. Army Helicopter Pilot in Vietnam

Creator: James Joyce | 2003-06-01

Publisher: McFarland & Company Incorporated Pub

About this book
The author was drawn into the Army through ROTC, and was trained to fly helicopters in combat over Vietnam. He flew both Huey "slicks" and Huey "gunships": the former on defense as he flew troops into battle, and the latter on offense as he took the battle to the enemy. Through this book, the author relives his experiences flying and fighting, with special attention given to the pilots' day-to-day lives - such as the prankish smoke bombing of Disneyland, the nickname for a United States Army-sponsored compound for prostitution. Some of the pilots Joyce served with survived the war and went on to have careers with commercial airlines, and many were killed.

About this book
Flying insects are intelligent micromachines capable of exquisite maneuvers in unpredictable environments. Understanding these systems advances our knowledge of flight control, sensor suites, and unsteady aerodynamics, which is of crucial interest to engineers developing intelligent flying robots or micro air vehicles (MAVs). The insights we gain when synthesizing bioinspired systems can in turn benefit the fields of neurophysiology, ethology and zoology by providing real-life tests of the proposed models. This book was written by biologists and engineers leading the research in this crossdisciplinary field. It examines all aspects of the mechanics, technology and intelligence of insects and insectoids. After introductory-level overviews of flight control in insects, dedicated chapters focus on the development of autonomous flying systems using biological principles to sense their surroundings and autonomously navigate. A significant part of the book is dedicated to the mechanics and control of flapping wings both in insects and artificial systems. Finally hybrid locomotion, energy harvesting and manufacturing of small flying robots are covered. A particular feature of the book is the depth on realization topics such as control engineering, electronics, mechanics, optics, robotics and manufacturing. This book will be of interest to academic and industrial researchers engaged with theory and engineering in the domains of aerial robotics, artificial intelligence, and entomology.

Encyclopedia of Machine Learning

Creator: Claude Sammut, Geoffrey I. Webb | Computers - 2011-03-28

Figure 4 Super-imposed sequence ... Sensing capabilities are oen poor: For small remotely controlled (RC) helicopters, sensing is limited because the on- board sensors must deal with a large amount of vibration caused by the helicopter blades rotating at about Hz, as well as higher frequency noise from the engine.

I was hopeful but that faded rather quick

Let me first say I am a big fan of WLToys Helicopter products. I own multiple V911s and v922s. Past positive experiences led me to making the purchase of the V912 Helicopter. While my v911s are very fun I was looking to go to a larger heli just to scratch an itch. Because I have had great experiences with both the v911 and v922 I expected the same from the v912. Below are my thought of the heli and then the reason for 3 stars and a return product.Unboxing: Out of the box I was like a kid on Christmas (I'm 30 but still a big kid). The helicopter looks fantastic. The body is very similar to the v911, but feels and looks so much stronger due to all of the metal parts. Although I was aware of the dimensions of the helicopter when I ordered it, seeing it in person my first thoughts were "wow this is big". The physical build quality is great and I have no doubts that the heli could take some punishment in the event a harder crash should happen. The remote was a very... 3/5 Dustin Spires - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Requires a bit of fine tuning...but a good start

For a first helicopter, I'd not suggest this..but rather, go with the V911. After you learn the basics of flying and crashing, you can move up to this flying bus. At about 16 inches long, you can really get some speed up but it's hard to stop on a dime like the V911 could.Overall you need to fine tune the product from the box. Level your swashplate by eye and then you're set to bind and fly. The stock battery gives you about 9 minutes flight time, but be sure to set a timer for 7 or 8 to give you time to land!I suggest going to HobbyKing and getting their "Hobbyking 2-8S Cell Checker with Low Voltage Alarm" Set it to 3.4 or so and do some testing at lower levels to see where you get after the alarm sounds. For me 3.3 is too low and only gives me about 30 seconds landing time. The unit needs to be balanced a bit but will fly none the less. There are plenty of prop balancers you can get at hobby or online shops. I'd suggest you get them... 5/5 Dave - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Worth every penny...Most AWESOME!

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:42 MinsLet me say, this is easily the most awesome thing I have ever owned. I received this helicopter as a 30th birthday present and my childhood dreams of becoming a helicopter pilot were once again restored! :) This thing looks, sounds, and maneuvers just like a real helicopter. The sound this thing makes alone was enough to impress me (a bit intimidating actually) and we had a blast chasing the cat around the yard with the heli :). It is quite agile for its size (this thing is large) but you have to remember you are moving more mass. So if you are in an aggressive forward flight, give some time and space to slow back down. Also, you want to make sure to give yourself plenty of open space. This thing is no toy and could easily hurt someone if the blades come in contact with skin (especially neck height..ouch). The box says 14years and up and I would definitely recommend you stick with that. With all of that positive stuff I will say, like... 4/5 E. Ridenour - See all my reviews, August 21, 2013

Perfect after mods and huey body

Customer Video Review Length:: 4:07 Minsthis is one great helo I paid $86 bucks for mine including shipping over at banggood, but the mods are a huge help, heat sinks, lipo battery, canopy mod, landing skid rubber nuts, this bird is not easy to fly should have some flying behind you before trying, that said, I love how this handles, smooth, hovers great, great head speed even into wind, love that you can control the percentage of use on your sticks I like 85%, default is 90%, makes much more easy to fly, no dual rates on the remote but at this price that be asking too much this computer really tried to go towards the hobby end grade on this helo, once I completed my mods it fly's just as good as my $159 Walkera V200D02 and better than any Eflite Blade, so if your into the market for a good 4 channel but the hobby grades at over $150 is to pricey and the lower grade double horse not enough power this is the bird, watch my video I posted here, that was my very 1st flight and after the mods were all... 5/5 Dan (aka THXkid) (Phoenix, Az United States) - See all my reviews, August 27, 2012

It's more than you're paying for

Customer Video Review Length:: 4:41 MinsThis is my 3rd heli ever. I'm been slowly teaching myself to fly so I can shoot aerial video. I'm a videographer by trade. So, all my heli purchases are based off my end game, which is to fly a DSLR. The MJX F45, for me, is a solid step in that direction. I was easily able to mount a GoPro to the front and relocate the battery for stable, balanced flight. The F45 lifts the additional weight of the GoPro without the housing (slightly less than the stock battery) without problem. I can still easily control the heli, even in a slight breeze. I have been able to fly the F45 higher than I should given my skill level. I've learned a ton with this heli. It's my first 4ch and first single blade. I've crashed it an embarrassing about of times and it's bounced back with very little damage. It even survived a huge fall shown in the video, with a camera attached, and still took to the air afterward (although it now flies horribly and needs repair)... 5/5 Twelvizm (Portland, Oregon) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?), November 26, 2012

    Eminently flyable!

I decided to buy the MJX F645 4 channel helicopter after reading many positive reviews, including that of Dan (THX Kid). It was also on sale at a local retailer at a great price, and spare parts seem to be readily available as well. The radio is 2.4 GHz and has a longer range than the 27-40 MHz offerings. All plus points! My only prior experience was with 3 channel co-axials, and I don't have access to a simulator. I didn't even have training landing gear attached. I am also not a video gamer, and was never any good at them either (just mentioning all this to indicate that I have just average hand-eye coordination skills!)Yet I was able to take this helicopter off, fly and land safely. The remote has the option to select what the manufacturer calls "Mod 2", and I selected this, since it resembles 3 channel control setups, in which the left stick controls throttle, and the right stick controls elevator and rudder. Experienced pilots would select what the manufacturer calls "Mod 4"... 5/5 Lentar - See all my reviews I decided to buy the MJX F645 4 channel helicopter after reading many positive reviews, including that of Dan (THX Kid).
